Adapted from a project developed by Mrs. Maryann Kelly of Lakeland High School - Shrub Oak, NY
Background:
In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president. He faced a major national crisis - the Great Depression. During his campaign, FDR promised relief, recovery, and reform. During a 1933 fireside chat, Roosevelt introduced his plan, the "New Deal." He promised that in the first 100 days of his presidency, he would implement programs to help relieve unemployed and impoverished Americans. He expanded these programs during his second term and was successful in providing aid to many Americans.
Task:
When President Franklin D. Roosevelt made his first speech as president on March 3, 1933, he stated “... the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."
