POLITICAL PARTY PAMPHLET
Part I - Researching the Major Parties
Your first task will be to check out the websites of the Republicans and Democrats and examine their platforms. Using the graphic organizer provided, fill in where each party stands on each issue (in your own words). For the Republicans, click on each of the major topic links and choose one sub-topic (for a total of six) to summarize. For the Democrats, click the Issues link and choose six issues to summarize (under the "Share This" yellow tag).

Part II - Develop your Personal Platform (or a Parody!)
Use a sheet of notebook paper and come up with six different issue positions of your own - each under a different category. What do you believe the government's role should be on these issues? If you choose, you may also come up with a more "creative" list of positions - even ones you disagree with, or are rather ridiculous (provided you keep it clean). Here is a list of categories for you to consider, to help you get started:
Health Care
The Environment National Defense Energy Independence |
Business Regulation
Family Values Civil Rights Religious Expression |
Education
Taxes Immigration Welfare Programs |
Part III - Create Your Own Party Pamphlet
Now that you have looked at the two major parties and developed your own list of important issues and positions, your task is to create your own party. First, decide what you will call your party. Then, decide what your party's mascot will be. Most importantly, come up with a list of beliefs and values that your party will stand for (your own "platform"). To put it all together, you will design and create a pamphlet to promote your party and its platform. Your goal should be to convince people who agree with your positions to join your party, so come up with something attractive - be creative.
